What Is Blu-Ray

Blu-Ray Player news No Comments »

Lets briefly talk about , what is a Blu-ray and what are its benefits. According to complete desktop encyclopedia, Blu-ray is a high capacity optical disc, that can store upto 4.5hrs of high definition video (HD) on a single sided 25gb disc.

Blu-Ray

The technology was first introduced onto the market by some of the global leaders, (Sony, Hitachi and Phillips) in electronics in 2003 but only in Japan to begin with, it took the world by storm and soon became known as the the future of video playback.

It is named Blu-Ray due to the blue violet colour of the laser that reads the content on the disc. It does this by reading pits a third of the size of a DVD on tracks that are packed together much tighter than previous generarions of DVD.

Blu-Ray supports the advanced H.264 and VC-1, video encoding algorithims as well as MPEG-2, which is utilised by conventional DVD, it also supports the 1080p which is common feature of all new generation LCD and Plasma HDTV’s.

Sony used the Blu-ray feature to promote the launch of the PS3 which includes a Blu-Ray player as its primary drive unit.

Blu-Ray is the most advanced digital playback recording technology, currently on the market and this has been proven, without doubt since its initial launch in Japan, back in 2003.

The big drawback for most was the inhibiting cost of a player, which at first was over $1000, but due to sales figures and demand, that cost is now below $300 for most.
